Marouane Fellaini considers Manchester United were quick to bag Jose Mourinho and criticised the club turnaround in hiring and firing managers.
The Belgian spent five-and-a-half years before leaving Old Trafford in January to get Shandong Luneng in the Super League at United, during which time he played under four different supervisors. Fellaini won the EFL Cup and Europa League in 2017 beneath Mourinho but the Portuguese was sacked in December last year.
But Uniteds problems havent settled with Mourinhos death – with successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer presiding on the clubs worst start to a season for 30 years this term – and Fellaini believes the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager should have been given more time.
They brought in one of the greatest managers in the world in Jose Mourinho, he wished to build a team and they chased him Fellaini told reporters. Its not simple to build a team at the time, you want more than a couple of decades.
I dont understand what theyll do with Solskjaer however, for me, to acquire things and to improve, you need time. Mourinho, for its season, he did amazingly, he improved the team, won matters. Ok, the season was a little more challenging, but he attempted, you know, and also did his very best to help the team. They made a decision to sack him.
For me, yes [United were overly hasty in sacking Mourinho] as a manager like that comes and that he wants a whole lot of players to execute his own doctrine. He wished to build his group and after two decades, or two years and a halfthey made a decision to sack him since the outcomes were not there.
The 31-year-old played David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho and, briefly, Solskjaer throughout his time at Old Trafford, winning the FA Cup beneath the Dutchman, and he says none of these coaches were given sufficient time in the role by the club.
They caused Moyes, they didnt give him his a while. They brought in Van Gaal they handed him two years and we began to do a few things , he won the cup but only because they want to win fast after that the manager was sacked by them, I presume. A supervisor like Van Gaal tactically is very robust and has a great deal of expertise and they sacked him, he said.
But should you look to construct a team you require time, not alter a manager every couple of years, every year. If the manager doesnt do well for four or five games, they would like to sack him.
Manchester United won everything for years with Sir Alex Ferguson, so for another person to come along and do what he did is not that easy. They had a strong foundation and a team. It is not simple for somebody to come and perform like Sir Alex Ferguson. People and fans of Manchester United want that, but soccer has transformed, the mindset of players has changed.
Fellaini was critical of some of these younger players at United for time they spent on social media and reckons Solskjaer will struggle to be competitive by simply relying on youngsters after deciding to proceed on more experienced gamers like himself, even Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.
You find a few players go straight into the dressing room following games and go straight onto social media, he added. It is wrong. Now you have a supervisor who desired young players and theyll be up and down, down and up; thats soccer, that is what happens with players that are young.
Of course you cant play just young gamers, you require a mix. To win games, to win games, to win big games you need expertise. Obviously you may win with young players, but not each match.
Fellaini added:The players that left are players of expertise. Hence that the trainer decided he did not want them thats the option of the coach. He decided he didnt desire Sanchez or even Lukaku. That is his problem. Hes his players now, therefore he must handle this.
He [Solskjaer] did not have a dialogue with me if Ill do or not. I signed up a contract one of the greatest managers in the world needed me to stay. But after that, if a new boss comes and Im not in his aims, naturally it was time for me to leave and that I do not regret it at all.
