Former UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is currently in discussions with the world’s top MMA promotion about a new contract, according to her representative Audie Attar, who talked to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on his MMA show. Cyborg has just one fight left her contract following her shocking KO loss to Amanda Nunes in UFC 232, but her and her agents have been clear with the UFC that they are interested in a reunion.
According to Attar, Cyborg expects to fight at UFC 237, which takes place this May at Curitiba, Brazil. The principal event of that event will be headlined by UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas carrying on No. 1 competitor Jessica Andrade, also it makes a great deal of awareness to pump up the undercard using a fighter of Cyborg’s fame and name worth, notably in Brazil. If Cyborg does fight in UFC 237, that will be the final fight on her contract, as he’s just 1 fight left on it without any champion’s clause because of losing the belt.
The UFC will be smart to bring back Cyborg on a brand new deal. She has proven to be a small pay-per-view draw in some time when the UFC needs fighters who sell displays, and she won’t be economical to re-sign, she is proven to be well worth the money. So far as women’s fighters go, there aren’t many more exciting fighters than Cyborg and there sure are not many with much more title worth than she’s. The UFC absolutely should re-sign her as long as the request is appropriate.
Even though it would be wonderful to view Cyborg get a rematch with Nunes viewing as though she had been on a 13-year win streak before dropping her belt in upset fashion, it’s very unlikely Nunes would take this struggle. The rumor is that Nunes wants to battle Holly Holm alongside for the UFC women’s bantamweight championship, which would leave Cyborg with no upcoming logical opponent. There aren’t too many featherweights in the UFC right now, but the two which do stand out are Megan Anderson and Cat Zingano. Anderson just beat Zingano in controversial fashion following a flea slit her attention and the fight was stopped in the first round at UFC 232, but Anderson did catch her hands raised. If the UFC desired to perform Cyborg from Anderson in Brazil, that’s a struggle which produces a whole lot of sense.
Cyborg will fight that last battle of her contract, but if she does enter free service, she will have a lot of suitors. Obviously, Bellator would take a run at her ex-Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker is in control of the company. But I would suspect RIZIN and ONE would likewise take a run at her, not to mention that the WWE, Golden Boy MMA and even some boxing promotions. Fundamentally, Cyborg will have tons of alternatives to choose from. However, if her broker has been sincere, she wants to return to the UFC, and it would be ideal to get MMA fans if that is what occurs.
