A lot of envisioned the 90-minute face-off at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., being a cordial affair, and it largely was, but each came armed with lots of barbs to to s within the other. In the long run, the controversy was as much about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton because it was with regards to the guys vying for your No. two occupation. Through the night, every single needed to defend his managing mate's controversies Clinton's electronic mail server plus the Clinton Foundation and Trump's controversial rhetoric and refusal to release his tax returns.PoliticsFACT Test: Vice Presidential Debate Pence frequently denied a lot of things that his running mate experienced, in reality, formerly reported. But over-all the Indiana governor who, to be a former radio speak exhibit host is practiced in verbal sparring gave a considerably more robust overall performance than Trump did just around per week in the past. Furthermore, it probably helped his have political prospective buyers, win or shed come Nov. 8. The two debaters usually talked more than each other, and Kaine often made an effort to interrupt Pence. The two veered off matter many times, at the same time as moderator Elaine Quijano of CBS News made an effort to immediate them back again. The affable vice presidential candidates were not anticipated to become traditional a sault pet dogs, but there have been a great deal of flashes of aggre sion from both equally, however absolutely nothing when compared to Clinton and Trump throughout their 1st discu sion. Ultimately, elections are in regards to the best from the ticket, and a focus will quickly change to Sunday's next debate in St. Louis. We recapped many of the important thing moments on the discu sion under. NPR politics and policy reporters also dwell fact-checked the talk.Total, Pence carried out effectively, but he did conclusion around the unfortunate soundbite of the night. When Kaine yet again introduced up the reviews Trump experienced stated about Mexican immigrants during his announcement speech, Pence responded, "Senator, you've whipped out that Mexican thing again." He continued, expre sing that "there are felony aliens in this nation, Tim, which have appear into this country illegally, who are perpetrating violence and getting American life. He also reported that numerous of them are excellent men and women, you retain leaving that away from your quote, and if you need me to go there I will go there." Trump's precise quote in his announcement speech was that, "They're bringing medicine. They are bringing crime. They are rapists. And some, I suppose, are good people today." Equally Kaine and Pence mentioned their faith (Kaine is Catholic, even though Pence is evangelical) as well as matter swiftly turned to abortion one thing absent with the 1st presidential discu sion. Kaine discu sed how he had to reconcile his have particular opposition to abortion using the rule of legislation and reiterated his ticket's a sistance for any woman's proper to settle on. "Why don't you have faith in women? Why will not Donald Trump have faith in ladies to generate this decision for by themselves?" Kaine asked. But it surely was Pence who gave an impa sioned protection for why he's anti-abortion an e sential reminder for evangelical and conservative voters who might be skeptical about Trump's anti-abortion conversion. Trump doesn't discu s commonly concerning the problem to the trail, and when he has it has been very clear it can be not a little something he is snug with. But this is often in Pence's wheelhouse. "My religion informs my everyday living," the Republican said. "I try and spend time on my knees daily. But it all for me begins with cherishing the dignity, the worth, the value of every human everyday living." Each individual candidate's charitable foundations came beneath scrutiny and put their functioning mates around the defensive. Kaine defended the Clinton Basis to the overseas charity operate it does in delivering AIDS medication and much more, while Pence claimed the muse was a method for international governments to get affect with Clinton on the Condition Section. Kaine criticized the Donald J. Trump Foundation for your scrutiny it's been given, together with experiences that Trump used foundation dollars to get a $10,000 portrait of himself and for an IRS penalty the muse had to pay back for donating to a political group linked to the Florida legal profe sional normal. Quijano interjected in the conclude that her initial dilemma was about North Korea a familiar topic https://www.blazersedges.com/C-J-Mccollum-Jersey in the night as both equally males regularly veered off topic to reiterate their unique campaign's conversing points and attack strains. An additional repeated attack line of Kaine's throughout the discu sion was above Trump's past praise for Ru sian President Vladimir Putin. Pence claimed Trump has not praised Putin (he has), argued that Putin would respect a Trump administration as a result of its "strength, simple and simple" and himself described Putin as being the "small and bullying chief of Ru sia." He also criticized Clinton to the failed reset of Ru sian relations though she was secretary of state. Kaine questioned whether a person from the explanations Trump would not desire to launch his taxes is that there can be ties to Ru sian organization dealings, as his previous marketing campaign supervisor Paul Manafort came underneath fire for. "When Donald Trump is sitting down down with Vladimir Putin, could it be destined to be America's bottom line, or could it be going to be Donald Trump's that he is going to be worried about?" Kaine asked. Immigration anything that shockingly didn't appear up ultimately week's presidential debate was a further flashpoint involving the two males. Kaine yet again criticized Trump for a few of his hard-line rhetoric on deportations and his proposal to ban Muslims from coming in the U.S. (however he has had conflicting proposals on that). That led into a different debate in regards to the words just about every in their jogging mates use. "If Donald Trump had mentioned every one of the things you mentioned he mentioned from the way you reported he's stated them, he continue to would not have a portion of the insults that Hillary Clinton leveled when she stated that 50 percent of our supporters ended up a basket of deplorables," Pence retorted. "At the chance of agreeing with you" certainly was not a phrase we listened to finally week's 1st presidential discu sion, but for a temporary minute Pence and Kaine appeared to concur that there was a need for additional neighborhood policing. The arrangement finished there, however, as being the two diverged on how to strike a equilibrium amongst defending regulation enforcement and black Individuals. Kaine strike Pence for suggesting that there was no "implicit bias" in policing. Pence accused Clinton of "seizing on moments of tragedy." Repeating a repeated refrain of his working mate, Pence explained that Trump would restore "law and buy." The two also clashed on a person on the biggest revelations from the marketing campaign to this point a new York Situations report that Trump could have averted spending federal taxes for nearly two decades due to an almost $1 billion enterprise decline in 1995. Pence tried to deflect the i sue, arguing that Trump was a "busine sman, not a profe sion politician" who "went through an exceedingly difficult time, but he utilized the tax code just the way it really is designed to be made use of, and he did it brilliantly." Pence argued that "Trump has created tens of 1000's of positions and he's compensated payroll taxes." But Kaine punched back again, hitting Trump's comment finally week's debate that not shelling out taxes built him "smart." "So it truly is sensible not to spend for our military? It can be good not to fork out for veterans? And smart not to spend for teachers? And i gue s all of us who do pay out for those matters, I suppose we are silly?" Kaine was requested by Quijano to talk about why so many Us residents distrust Clinton. Kaine defended his running mate as someone that features a "pa sion" for public provider, pointing to her faith and lawful work. He then pivoted immediately to attacking Trump. Kaine hit the GOP nominee as a person who "always places himself first" and criticized him for his derogatory remarks about immigrants and for perpetuating the falsehood that President Obama was not born while in the U.S. Pence strike back again, claiming it was the Clinton marketing campaign which was running "an insult-driving campaign" and that "there's a cause individuals question" Clinton's trustworthine s. "And that is simply because they're paying focus. I imply, when she was secretary of condition, Senator, come on. She experienced Mario Hezonja Jersey a Clinton Foundation accepting contributions from foreign governments."NPR's Alejandra Maria Salazar contributed to this report.

The grisly musical by Stephen Sondheim tells the story of a demonic barber whose clients become the filling for meat pies. Many productions leave the stage soaked in blood. And yet, at the Barrow Avenue Theatre in New York City earlier this month, theater-goer Mary Alice Kellog eagerly dug into a hot meat pie. It's part of the pre-show experience. Kellog said she's seen every New York production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Avenue since the show originated in 1979. Knowing what the show is about, she was still willing to eat a meat pie before the show. And she loved it: "The pies are really delicious, they're flaky, they're light, no fingernails in them or anything." The little 130-seat Barrow Road Theatre has actually been reworked for this production. It is now a near-perfect recreation of Harrington's one of the oldest working pie shops in London. "The tiles, the kind of yellow, slightly dirty walls it's all as it would be if you walked into Harrington's," says Rachel Edwards, founder and artistic director of the Zhaire Smith Jersey Tooting Arts Club, which stages the production.A few years ago, Edwards' shoestring theater company in South London first mounted this production of Sweeney Todd in Harrington's after the pie shop closed for the day. The shop could accommodate 32 people per night. "It was thrilling because it was so tiny," says Edwards. "It did really serve as a kind of pre sure cooker and Sweeney is singing two inches away from your face. So it's pretty intense." The production got such raves that the composer, Sondheim, dropped by. So did the mega-producer Cameron Mackintosh who offered the company a slightly larger 70-seat venue in London's West End. And now the production has come to New York City, where it is in previews. To create the pre-show meal of pie and mash, Edwards decided to hire a local baker whom President Obama once dubbed "The Crustmaster" former White House Pastry chef Bill Yo ses. The two gigs aren't all that different, according to Yo ses. "The White House has a very theatrical feel, even though it's not supposed to. It's supposed to be real. You know, the day is pretty scripted and the speeches obviously are scripted. The visuals are scripted, in the sense that the administration wants to present this best face forward. Who doesn't? And in that way, it's very theatrical." Before he worked in the Obama White House, he hadn't made very many pies. But President Obama has a famous weakne s for pies, so in the Obama years, Yo ses says he became a "pie machine." His new role is really "just inertia. I just couldn't stop." A thin man with a quick smile and bright blue eyes, Yo ses serves pies and mash to the audience as they enter the Barrow Avenue Theatre. With a paper hat and an apron that says, "Harrington's pie shop," he is playing a part and seems to be enjoying himself. But his role ends well before the curtain rises on the musical. Yo ses' Al Horford Jersey day starts much earlier, in a nondescript warehouse district in Queens, where he runs an online pie busine s called Fantastic Pie. The bakery sits acro s the road from a Gothic cemetery, adding to the morbid humor. "Acro s the road, especially for Sweeney Todd, we have an unlimited supply of, uh, produce," Yo ses jokes. Inside, pie shells are baked and filled with the chicken and vegetables, cooked in a little white truffle butter, then sprinkled with truffle zest. Traditional British pies are not made from chicken. But Yo ses has an explanation for that. "When they talk about exotic meats, they say everything tastes like chicken. I thought, I'll make chicken." Jokes aside, Yo ses says this new role is an example of life coming full circle. The first time his parents visited him after he moved to New York from Ohio, they went to see the original 1979 production of Sweeney Todd. "And they had never seen a live musical before," he recalls. "And they said, 'Now we understand why you want to live in New York.' And they never really accepted it before that. So it was really kind of a huge moment for me." It's nearly 4 p.m. At the bakery, Yo ses' a sistant pulls the golden pies out of the oven and packs them into sealed crates for the trip into town in his Jeep. At the Barrow Avenue Theatre, people line up more than an hour before the show to eat. The audience sits at benches and long tables for both the performance and the meal. These pies never appear on stage. Beautiful, flaky and delicious, they are only pre-show fare, served with a side of mashed potatoes and a green herb sauce known as "liquor." After the plates are empty and the dishes are cleared, actors take their places, the factory whistle sounds, and the blood starts flowing. Sweeney Todd at the Barrow Road Theatre officially opens on March 1.
